Passing of a BrotherJun, 26
Firefighter Jimmy Yohn from Highspire Fire Dept. died earlier this week while serving the country over sea in Iraq. Jimmy joined the fire service when he was 19. This was his first tour over seas and he was looking forward to coming home in October. Please keep the family, friends, and the brothers of the Highspire Fire Dept. in your prayers.
Jun, 22Early Morning Mulch Fire
This morning around 6am county dispatched Company 35 to Abbey Lane for Mulch on fire in front of a house. The Engine and Engine-1 responded with 7 members and arrived to find mulch against the front of the house smoldering. The cause was determined to be that the mulch was put over lights in the ground to illuminate the front of the house at night. Crews wet down the area and removed the mulch from the lights, then cleared the scene in about 40 minutes.
Community Day plus a callJun, 21
Today around 11am crews loaded the Rescue and went to Calvary Church for their Community Day. Crews gave tours and made sure all the firekids had their helmets. After a great lunch at the event, Company 35 was dispatched to an accident on Amy Drive. The Engine and Rescue responded with 9 members and arrived to find a pickup truck into a utility pole with one person injured. Crews assisted with patient care and cleared the scene in about half hour.
Jun, 19A Training Night to Unwind
Tonight members gathered for training and were delighted to find out that this was a night to hang out and relax. Members went across the street to the softball field and played a friendly game of softball. Back to work next week!
Gas Leak In Blue Meadow FarmsJun, 18
Crews were dispatched early this afternoon for a gas leak in Blue Meadow Farms. The Truck responded with 4 and arrived on scene promptly. Crews found that a crew of construction workers had struck a line while drilling to put in a fiber optics cable and had a heavy odor. Neighborhood homes were also checked to make sure there was no gas that had leaked into them. The Truck crew cleared after UGI had arrived and Fire Police remained on the scene for crowd control.

This evening as storms were making their way out of the area, county advised of an accident with injuries om North Mountain Rd in the area of ACE Hardware. Crews arrived to find no injuries but took care of fluids and battery disconnects. Units were available after about 15 minutes.
2008 Convention in WilliamstownJun, 14
This past week, members spent countless hours scrubbing and polishing the Engine, Truck, Rescue, and Tanker in preparation for the 90th Annual DCVFA Convention. We arrived first for judging in Williamstown, then moved to the staging area and hung out for a while. Today around 5pm county dispatched units to an accident on Crums Mill Road in the area of McIntosh Road. Units arrived to find a single vehicle into a pole. Crews assisted with patient care and packaging and stood by while the tow truck driver removed the car from the pole. Fire police stayed on-scene until PP&L arrived to repair the pole. Tonight crews loaded the Rescue and Engine and headed to Grantville to train with the Grantville and West Hanover Fire Companies. The idea of this training is to simulate accidents that we may come across when responding to I-81 and get to know each other's styles and tools. Units from Dauphin and Lebanon Counties this afternoon were dispatched to Grantville in the 9000 Block of Jonestown Road for a working structure fire with rapid calls. After dispatch Engine 35 was en route with 6. Crews from the Engine upon arrival went to manpower and staged until being told to go interior and assist with extinguishing, overhaul and ventilation. Today was the 2nd Annual Fire Ride Motorcycle dice run. Bikers met at our station for coffee and donuts before starting the 87-mile ride through 6 firehouses in 3 counties. While at each stop, they rolled the dice to try and win some prize money. After a cookout at the station, the prizes were given away and a few pictures were snapped with the front-line rigs. This morning crews loaded the Rescue, Tanker, and Engine-1 to take part in Kutztown Fire Company's 100th Anniversary Celebration and Parade. After a stop for breakfast at Esther's, we took some time for final detailing before being judged. After staging the rigs, we boarded a shuttle to Kutztown Firehouse for the housing and dedication of their Aerial truck. The parade followed, then time to relax at the fairgrounds before coming home. Restaurant Explodes in HummelstownMay, 21
This afternoon around 1:30pm, Air 35 was dispatched to assist companies operating a restaurant explosion in Hummelstown. According to local news channels, a natural gas line at the former Rosie's Bar & Grill was struck by construction crews on the scene and an explosion followed sending debris across the road and breaking windows of adjacent buildings. The Air assisted with filling breathing cylinders and was on scene until about 6:00pm. And the Truck was transfered to Middletown to stand by while Truck 88 was on the scene. ... more

Live Burn Training at HACCMay, 15
This evening members gathered for live burn training at Harrisburg Area Community College. After arriving, crews were established for the Engine, Engine-1, Rescue, and Air units. Captain-1 (Rodkey) and Chief 2 (D.Crum) setup the burn building and got the fires going for a few run-ins. Units were then "dispatched" to the scene with specific assignments and were critiqued on their performance.
